Can you name all the famous fashion photographers (past or current) in the world? (include photographers from every country preferable).

I just want to find out why certain countries do not produce famous fashion photographers.

What do you mean by 'famous'? Popular? Established? Well-known? By whom? Locally, or in the region, in the States, Europe, etc?

Fame relies on who you know, who's willing to talk about you, what's in season, who's setting the trend; just as much as it does on hard work and talent. So if it seems that country X doesn't seem to have any famous fashion photographers...maybe the photographers there just haven't had their big break yet.

To answer ur question why certain countries do not produce famous fashion photograhers, u have to use PORTER'S DIAMOND. Go internet and search what is porter's diamond.

I will use Singapore as the focus.

(a)demand condition
Are u able to list out many singapore labels? Are there many well established local and international singapore brands here? Answer is NO. most of what we get are imported from overseas, and it is the overseas companies who have headaches finding good fashion photographers to shoot and advertise their products. In singapore, no good labels = no demand for fashion photographers = not many fashion photographers, let alone famous ones.

(b)factor condition
Seriously, do u think that our govt is really promoting arts??? What they are doing is to find another means to earn $$$$$$$$$. Half hearted efforts to promote art = low awareness & demand by ppl for fashion photographers in Singapore = not many fashion photographers, let alone famous ones.
Worst of all, singapore population is soooooo small, the number interested in photography and be full-time in it are even smaller, and those that specialise in fashion photography are evennnnnnnn smaller.
If u look at the european countries, france, italy etc. they have very very strong artistic culture and govt and society support, naturally their "art level" is way above the rest of the world.

(c)existing and supporting industries
As mentioned earlier, local labels are so few until there is no demand for fashion photographers to advertise their prdts. And worst, the photography companies in SG are rather independant and each care for their own ass. Like that how to have good fashion photographers in Singapore?

(d)intensity of rivalry
low demand, low need for fashion photographers, naturally the number of firms are little and of course there is little competition. With little competition, how to have major improvements? Look at japan electronics industry, there is sooooo many players until each and everyone has to come up with innovative things to survive and that is why japan's electronics is superb.

Countries do not produce fashion photographers. No govt gives money or support to fashion photographers. People become fashion photographers because they want to, not for their country.

In a globalised age, to talk about countries in such a context is meaningless. Many foreign (ie non-American) photographers base themselves in the US, for instance. If they are good, they get the job. If not, they eventually have to eat humble pie and leave. No firm will give a job to a photographer on the basis of nationality.

Afghanistan got so many beautiful models waiting to be discovered but not enough fashion photographers.

I guess everybody there like to carry guns rather than DSLRs.

do note that alot of fashion photographers don't start out wanting to be fashion photographers
it's about having a personal vision that translates into something that someone else can use and will pay you for.
the best fashion photographers have a strong vision that doesn't need to rely solely on fashion
Peter Lindbergh's work is not about fashion
neither is Paolo Roversi
and Inez & Vinoodh are much more complex than most people think...yeah let's not blame government and whatnots yah? Each country's situation is different,it's up to us photographers to create opportunities sometimes.

Sorry but i disagree, i was from the fashion industry and you could get govt sponsership aids in countries such as UK and even Singapore, but the modes and means of sponnership differs.

Countries sponnsor for some reasons, if the industry supports many getting a good number of their skilled and/or unskilled workers employment or aids the country in frame of the particular trade they wish to promote, why not.

Traditionally countries like France prides their Haute Couture Houses with gleaming pride, when non french designers head the house, its also full of shock and pressure for the non frenchman. Only Karl (German) seems to be a oddily in the French House of Chanel. Others like Martin Margiela ( Belgium) for Hermes last for a few collections.

Even when Large companies like Italian Prada buys over Helmut Lang (New York) or jil sander (german), the indifferences between work style and design philosophies can force outser their principal designers from their own houses.

Fashion is one international enterprise but most work on their roots for design, etc hard for singaporeans to dress like hong kongers, cos of differences in climate and culture.

you dun understand the system enough to comment weileong. To show in the country you are staging is a big thing, ie, not representing the country, but representing the brand, which is always associated with the country of orgin. See big names main lines, not their difusion lines always has Chanel, made in France. Versace made in Italy.

You are thinking world cup, please do not talk about fashion when you know so little.

This is not about putting you down. I already acknowledged what you said about sponsorship is true. Many govts have all kinds of grants, aid schemes and sponsorship for various industries. These are done mainly for political reasons, not because they care about any particular industry. Eg our govt has various schemes to help small businesses. However, there are some industries which are of strategic national interest (eg defence industries, wheat farming, etc). Unfortunately photography is not one of them.

I understand well the issues of national and cultural pride. Eg. all Taiwanese went ecstatic when Lee Ang won the oscar. However, in an age of globalisation, to say that countries "produce" photographers is an anachronism. Countries rarely produce anything other than politics. Things are produced by people and by companies, and they mainly do it for profit, not for national pride (although they will wave the flag when it helps them get their soundbite).

* Countries increasingly relying on foreign talent
* Countries giving citizenship to almost anyone who can make a difference for them
* Lines blurring between natives and immigrants

How do you define what country a person is from any more? The passport tells you his current citizenship, but a person can have more than one passport. In any case, there are more factors at play than just what the passport says.
