During the last 2012 USA Presidential debate on foreign policy, Romney said: "Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world. It's their route to the sea."

This was the 5th time he said it. This is the guy who wants to be President. He probably thinks Singapore is inside China.

Iran has direct access to international waters through its large coastline on the Gulf and does not share any border with Syria.

about the intellect of the republicans and their propensity to create strife...it doesn't surprise me when they continue to screw up like that :bsmilie:

He's a good friend with the bloody Bush family.
Recognize the similarity?

Now the republicans are defending mitt by saying he meant the coastal access to israel.

Spin doctors working overtime.

Didn't surprise me at all.
Their education system chooses to teach them mostly about America and very little about the rest of the world.

The father set the standard for the son to follow, but unfortunately the son cannot live up to it. No further explanation required.

The idea isn't really only the geographical nature of the two nations relationship a key idea is comparison to the silk route and other ancient pathways. Though Iran has direct access the route through Syria had always been favoured to reach their major trading targets in Europe. No longer do "seas" really matter with aeroplanes and other innovations. But certainly Syria was and to some extent still is a pathway for some Iranian businesses into Europe.
