With the amount people are willing to pay for the S95 F/2 capabilities...was quite surprised this little gem was overlooked. The Olympus VG-130.

are there any other compacts with f/2.8 or faster that fit the less then $250 criteria?

actually many PnS has got f2.8~?? aperture... but it is the f2.0 + low noise + overrall fast operation that make it deserve the premium.
It is not just the lens, but rather the whole camera itself

With the difference in built quality... I dun think much would be tempted by this.

well i am doing some research into this for a friend of mine. any recommendations for f/2.8 pns with the less then $250 criteria?

agree with kei the finepix x100 is sure class.

single focal length? Eh...

My wife's compact is a Casio Exilim EX-Z550. It's f2.6 and I remember it going for less than 200 bucks. :)

thanks.

anything that also offers at least 720p video? The W530 and W510 is up to Standard definition only.

erm? 720p video for under $250? you might have to dig up some old models that have been discontinued.

f2.8, full frame, weather resist, less than $100

doubt my friend would be interested in film cameras not to mention it doesnt even have video mode.

anything else or is the VG-130 the only one having the features at the pricepoint?

so your friend doesn't mind... that perhaps the sensor might not be up to the job... just wants the f2.8 and 720p video?
as a person who understands photography you should be making a better recommendation

sony w530/560/570 all offers <=2.8 and 720p, all three models rated at <USD180 in dpreview
there is also canon a1200, a2200, a3300, fujifilm jx350, jx300
nikon s5100... so many model that fit the 720p and <=f2.8 criteria...

dpreview

is F2.8 all that impt in a PNS with a puny sensor?

and how will u control it properly with no full M mode? trying to do M mode on an entry level PNS is just painful. i don't think they were designed to be used like that.

Just laying all the cards on the table. Give him all the info and then let him pick himself after all not exactly a kid that needs to be spoonfed.

since no more contribution, looks like the VG-130 is the only one that meets the current criteria. Already have a couple of other models that are very good in certain camera functions within the budget so all thats left is to let him decide which one he want.

Letting technical issues like sensor size and so on is contrary to the mantra of "its the photographer, not the camera" isnt it? :)
