let's expecting full frame CCD ( NOT MOS or CMOS), it could be up to 30-50MP, the size of CCD is always a difficult. but hope those professional guy could solve it in near further, then CMOS will be out, of course CCD cost will be much higher!

let's wait and see!

But considering the increased area of a FF, wouldn't the charges increased as well? And when that happens, more dust will be attracted to it? :(

i think it really depends cause dust enters the camera mainly when u change lenses

I know, but in the midst of lens changing, the sensor would have been exposed to the elements amid behind a mirror and shuttle curtains....Theb again, its good that someone is coming out with FF sensors, that shall bring down the prices of FF DSLR :)

CCD resolution has maxed out at about 10MP for DX sized sensor. Which means that
for FF size, the resolution will probably max out at 22MP.

12MP DX sized sensor are all CMOS now. If the image processing is good, there may not be a need to go back to CCD because of cost and manufacturability reasons. Looking at the high ISO images from Canon and Nikon's D300 and D3, it seems that CMOS technology has improved quite substantially. The advantage which CCD had is now diminished. CMOS offers integration of ADCs into the same die and this makes them significantly faster than CCDs.

Don't forget the fact that pretty much all Medium Format backs are CCD.

So, the P45+ CCD, which measures 49.1mm x 36.8mm and has a resolution of 39MP - what are you going to call this size ? Fuller Full Frame ? ;p (sorry, tongue in cheek comment there)

What's wrong with CMOS?

There's really nothing wrong with CMOS so long as the quality it gives you is high enough to qualify it as good as CCD or higher. There really is no reason why it will not carry on to be used or offered in all DSLR camera. The big reason why camera companies will choose it over CCD is due to cost. There is no lack of research or use for CCDs till today...just that unless you do any search online you will not know it and you might feel CCD has lost the "war". That is not the case. It is still as much in used but well not so much for DSLRs at this time as cost wise, the CMOS has the edge. Well that is what I feel and after reading around.

If tomorrow, someone could improve the quality of the resolution or vibracy of the colours..etc. in the CCD, it just might again swing the other way. Formats like CCDs or CMOS and others in the wing or upcoming will always be coming into view and being implemented. For us amateur end users, so long as the results and picture quality passes the industry standards does it really make a difference for us to choose one over the other?

The largest Phase One digital back P45+ (39 megapix) uses a 49.1mm x 36.8mm CCD. Power hungry... :dunno:. The rated battery life is 2500 captures/4hours using 7.2V 2500mAh Li-ion battery.

Price... probably enough to buy a 2nd hand small car.

Seems good but it will still burn a big hole through my pocket into my thigh. ;p Anyway, the pixel density of a 10MP DX sized CCD sensor (D80/D200) is still higher, 26k/sq.mm vs 21k/sq.mm for the Phase One.
