Lightroom is great for managing and processing your photos if you do not need overly complicated edits!

Check Digital Darkroom, the link from ZCA points to that subforum. Besides: there is no recommendation other than: use what you need (and can afford) and what fits your workflow. No point getting Photoshop if all your editing is limited to a few general corrections. Lot's of freeware can do that as well. Lightroom is a good piece of software the also helps to organize large amount of images. Open Source like Gimp comes free and offers a lot of functions as well.

For windows, you can try Paint.net + picasa for basic jpeg editing and management.
