Was thinking of getting the Drobo S but after reading this review

Drobo S Review (USB 3.0, 2nd Generation)

decided not to. Problematic installation and slow slow speeds.

Anyone has any suggestions on easy to install, easy to use, and fase E-SATA external hdd RAID solutions? Thanks/

Not esata, but is a good solution. Synology DS1511+

You could just whack another couple of 1/2TB drives into your PC and use the Intel RAID Controller to put them together as a RAID 5 array. Really easy to set up, very safe and inexpensive.
This is what I use.

Sounds complicated because I have to mess with the internals. Also, I am thinking of doing it outside the computer so that I can move the drive from one PC to another if need be.

It helps to spend a few minutes over internals :)

Some come with eSATA and Ethernet interface, you are flexible with connectivity and can keep the system even if you switch to home LAN.
