DVI or HDMI or Display Port

Which will be better to use for my dell U2410. Mainly for photo editing.
I heard say D-port only carry 10 bit/channel while HDMI carry 12 bit/channel. Does it affect me during PP work?

HDMI and DVI connections can be interchangeably used. The amount of colour content carried over depends on your desktop settings.Windows is still using 16.7 million colours, thus still the 8 bit per channel colour information transfer. Either the DVI or HDMI connection has already surpassed that level, hence I do not see any difference on my monitors. Higher bit rates are for top-end Blu-Ray players to audio-video receivers or LCD/Plasma TVs. I currently use a Belkin HDMI cable that I got for free with my Philips 221E1HSB, changing over to HDMI connection yields no difference to my eyes.

My take will be go for HDMI, for one, you can reuse the cables for your home AV entertainment setup if you decide to change cable lengths later, the other is that the connector is not that big and less likely to snag other cables when you move it.

Hi,

Can your graphics card output 10-bit per channel? Only some of the workstation or professional graphics cards have 10-bit output, eg ATI FireGL, Nvidia Quadro.
The U2410 has a 8-bit panel. Only the more expensive LCDs such as the HP Dreamcolor or some of the NEC and Eizo have 10-bit panels. Also, CS4 and the current OS only output 8-bit colour depth. CS5 might support 10-bit though.

FYI, HDMI 1.3a can support 10, 12 or 16 bit. HDMI output is the same as DVI except it carries digital audio signal as well. DP can support 6,8, 10,12,16-bit.

my advice to you is to use the DVI... why? because:

1) either of the three will not cause any visible difference in image quality when using current computer sources and image editing software (even CS5 does not output 10bit per channel),
2) the monitor has two DVI cable and only one of HDMI and of DP, so don't waste
3) HDMI and DP can be better used for signal sources like DVD and BluRay players, which tend not to have DVI ports...

oh, that thread has progressed since I last read it... in any case, still the same, use DVI, save the other ports for other purposes, as (dual link) DVI is still able to handle 10bits/colour
