your first mistake is to compare apples with oranges. if oranges sour, who want to eat. sweet is the general expectation right? if compacts dun produce attractive vibrant images, which average consumer would want to buy... Please go understand a dslr.

first pic u are shooting into the sun, e flare is causing the degradation of image. 2nd shot looks normal. i presume no post process done? btw, u could post bigger images, small very hard to see.

Hi,

I owned a Canon 300D, i feel that the pics i took are abit blur and the colors seems very dull as compared to pics taken by my friends using compact camera. Anyone can advice me on where the problems lies? Is there some wrong with the camera settings?

If you had moved from a point-and-shoot compact digital camera. you will need some getting used to when moving to a DSLR. A point-and-shoot camera does almost everything in-camera. Sharpening, bumping up brightness, increasing colour saturation, reducing noise and so on.

However, the DSLR basically leaves pretty much everything alone with very little in-camera processing. I can't comment very much on your pics, except, the pictures tend to be a little under-exposed (you need to read up on exposure if you don't already know about it). DSLR enables you to control the ISO, shutter speed and aperture which affects the exposure of the camera. If you had left the camera on auto mode, sometimes, there are situations where the camera decides a low shutter speed, in which case handshake can cause the images to be "blur".

The learning curve may be staggering from the onset. But with an eager learning spirit, the move to DSLR can be really rewarding.

The cam can be made to do better than most 'compact cam'.

eg. The pics can be made sharper by using a higher speed.

There is nothing 'wrong' with the cam setting. Just that it the pic is not what you want to achieve. Try learning the use of various setting. Learn to shoot manual to achieve what you want. Your camera is not mean.

Some picture can be made brighter or 'improved' to your taste with some photoshop too. Below is one that is done in two minutes using your original posted filesize. Try using photoshop as well if you want to improve your picture this way.

tOGGY, what did you do to the picture? It looks so much better now. What was your work flow? Thanks.
Thanks for your kind comments.

I did not do much actually. Below are the steps if I rememered correctly:

a. "s" curve to bring up the dark areas.
b. Select sky and hue slightly richer and saturate.
c. Saturate general pic and up the contrast with USM Sharpen tool.

The primary instrument is the eye. Using the eye to judge as I go along, I do pay attention to that the picture is made more 3-dimensional and not flat like a roti-prata. Overdoing any aspect usualy do not work well.

The steps above should takes around 2 minutes with a practiced eye.

definately wrong settings, operator setting!

We too often blame the equipment, and forgot the operator.
