Dry box VS electronic dry cabin?

Hi, i just got my dslr 2 weeks ago, heard fr some people that i need to get a dry cabin within 3 months.. can anyone tell me more abt the diff between dry box n dry cabin? what is the price like if i'm on a tight budget?

Dry Box (lost cost):

20 to 30 bucks
smaller capacity
uses silicon gel (troublesome)


Electronic Dry Cabinet (high cost):

around 100 bucks
bigger capacity
uses electricity (convenient)


personally i'm using dry box. being using it for quite some time, well, it gets the job done i say.

Silica Gel ~$4 a bottle, lasts you between a few weeks to a few months depending on usage, add a digital hygrometer to ensure you're at the right humidity == ~$20-30 == total startup costs up to $70. A lot of trouble making sure u have the right amount of silica gel, replacement etc. Also, a $20-30 box might just barely fit your DSLR body + 1 lens + some accessories.

Dry cab typically comes with built-in hygrometer, doesnt use more electricty than a light bulb.

so personally u would recommend the dry cabinate? it last longer, less troublesome.. prob abt the same price as the dry cabin + gel + hygrometer? bigger in capacity?

Blue Silica gel is only $4 per bottle. But FYI, it is contain Cobalt Chloride for blue humidity indicator. Cobalt Chloride known as carcinogen.

It is better safe than sorry. Buy Electronic Dry Cab.

I bed to differ. in terms of cost, the 20 to 30 price range is already inclusive of a bottle of silicon gel, a build in hygrometer, as well as the dry box inself. If I were quoted 70 bucks for a dry box I will definitely get a dry cabinet instead, no doubt, cabinet is better.

some personal experience:

gaging the amount of silicon gel is not as hard as it seems, basically all i did is fill up the little container meant for it and there it goes, around 42%RH. for my area it last about 3 weeks before it reaches 55%.

well capacity wise depends on individuals, i can fit it a 350D, a kit lens, a sigma 18-200, a canon A95 plus a stack of old notes which i wanna preserve! cant afford for new lens, so not in issue.

in addition, silicon gel is reuseable, once it loses its 'dryness', just heat it with a microwave and its 'dry' again.

not sure about the chemical reaction, if the TS is worry about this, better get a dry cab.
