Drug trafficking = death, murder = short imprisonment

Just wondering about how ridiculous can the laws in Singapore get.\

Drug traffickers get the death sentences.
Lets think about it, what do drugs do? They purely numb and cause death (slowly and instant if used in massive dosage).

Cigarettes also cause lung cancer and eventually leading to death.


If the law is so strict, what about the rapists and murderers.

Examples:
Man who tortured the boy for 6 months leading to his death. He didn't get sentenced to the gallows. Merely imprisonment.

The Indian who raped number of women (tourist and air stewardesses) in hotel. He only got the imprisonment.

Maids who kill / burn employers, they don't get death for the past number of cases.

So what does it imply?

It means that like some careers....different crimes also have different prospects and outcomes. Choose wisely, or don't choose.

maybe that's why you need to be a judge (no jury allowed) in order to appreciate the complexity of it all.

you forgot to add, sex with minor now seems to be just probation and no criminal records (used to be caning - I guess those were the days when police wear shorts), must be more liberal now, start of the "american pie" culture.

Hmmm, your theory seems like: drug = casino gambling.

Opening casinos may affect more than 26,000 families. Cause financial, emotion and social problems also. Except may gambling will cause higher sucide rates I think. Drugs on the other hand is definite hanging when caught.

You have choice to go gambling or take drugs for the first time but once addicted, it's difficult to get off the hook.

Cigarette smokers do not steal and commit crimes to buy cigarettes. Have you seen drug addicts before? In my previous line of work, I have seen long term users who are so addicted that a long jail term is nothing to them. Comparing fags and drugs? Come on!

You forgot to mention that when the Indian got only imprisonment, his sentence was so long that when he comes out, the circle line will be obsolete and that he's getting 24 strokes of the rotan! That isn't small change.

I've no grouse with your view that the punishment for crimes seems to be uneven, you're certainly entitled to that view, but some objectivity is called for.

Nice to know that yet another Singaporean are agreeing that crimes (other that drugs) are getting more and more lenient nowadays.

Well, you are right about the "stealing and commiting crimes". As I've referred earlier, it sounds like drugs addiction = gambling addiction. These guys are so hardcore that they'll borrow every cent or worse, steal every cent to quench their addiction.

As for the Indian rapist, there's no sympathy from me about him. In fact, I hope that his punishment be more severe. Imagine the psychological harm he had brought to the women.
He knew he'll be caught, so he raped more. *^&^& him.

thats why family members can apply a permit to stop them from entering the casino (or something like that).

but to stop drug addict?? how??

Nothing is equal as different pple have placed different values in their life. Some may view an act as crime (etc drug trafficking) heavily whereas others may think it as not deserve the rope.

I do not support capital punishment, but in my opinion , this form of punishment does reduce certain sector of crimes to a some extend.

U need to read the history of singapore law like how it comes abt, why a certain punishment is meted out, why u cant give a certain crime certain punishment. There's some readin to be done before u can understand it.
