Helmut Newton, a world renowned photographer, was apparently fired from Singapore Straits Times for being incompetent. Here is the article that mentions it:

"Newton was born on October 31, 1920 and raised in Berlin, Germany. His father, a wealthy button manufacturer, tried to enroll him in the American School of Berlin but young Helmut was quickly expelled for constant daydreaming about photography, swimming, and girls. His first photographic apprenticeship came in 1936, when he became an assistant for the Berlin photographer, Elsie Simon. Also known as Yva, Simon was famous for her fashion portraiture and nude photography. She, along with Lotte Jacobi, numerous other Jewish photographers, and Newton himself, had to flee Germany in the early 1930s. Newton moved to Singapore to accept a photojournalist position at the Singapore Straits Times. Two weeks later he was fired, due to "incompetence." He then moved to Australia and acquired Australian nationality in 1938. After serving five years in the Australian army, he married and opened a small studio in Melbourne. In 1957 he moved to Paris, and his first solo exhibition was in 1975 at the Nikon gallery."

nice.

failed once. Doesn't make a complete failure. A good come back story.

One would rather be a fruitful failure, than a mediocre success.

Singapore will never tolerate such ppl. Here, everybody looks for instant glorification, someone who only becomes famous at the age of 55 is not someone this country values. In this country, if you fail once, even a small failure in your primary school, it will screw you up for the rest of your life. :thumbsd:

That is becoz you don't have a good track record.
These 3 magic words can do wonders in your life.

;) :sweatsm: ;)

it's not a matter of looking down or being looked down at.

it's more about whether you dare to do what you want to do.

are you ready to live your life?

I saw one of his shoot for a Harper's Bazaar or is it Vogue magazine, that article cum fashion spread is abt high heels... why women likes them even though they might be torturing... & the consequences of long time wearing of very high high heels... the photo is that German supermodel Nadia Auermann, once longest legs in Guiness World record for ladies, wore this very high siletto but had clutches, posing on a flight of stairs. She also had those metal antennas around the legs... for those ppl that broke their legs, i saw before in hospital... very freaky... I can always remember this photo... very powerful.

So we can safely predict that those who produce messy hair photos and got slammed will one day be the next Helmut Newton?

:bsmilie:
No, the summary of the article quoted is this:

His father, a wealthy button manufacturer, tried to enroll him in the American School of Berlin but young Helmut was quickly expelled for constant daydreaming about photography, swimming, and girls.

Your father must manufacture buttons, and you must be expelled for ogling, sports and photography. Then you confirm will become the next Helmut Newton. =)

..."Healthy mutton man"

"pornography, sucking and grills"...

"serving five years in the... ANG MO KIO MARKET"?!

Is it that bad huh, Ang Mo Kio Market as bad as army huh. =D

i second that... otherwise he will be higher paid than our PM... which in return make our PM even higher paid! lol

Just wait for a photographer who calls himself Helmut Wong, Helmut Tan or Helmut Lee etc. to come along. Then we have our Helmut Newton. :)

I don't know about you guys, but when I say Sion irl,

I tend to make it sound like

Siao-on. :dunno:

LOL... actually all the pros here, like Sion, catchtlights, Octane, DCA, Joho, Will, DP, eikin, Wolfgang etc. can setup a photography school mah. Then you can train up a lot of new Helmuts.
