do digicams have DOF preview and are they any use given the lack of sharpness in an LCD screen?

Sometimes, because for landscape, I can also use the scale on the lens for DOF. However, for marco, the DOF preview is very useful in helping you "SEE visually" which part of your subject is in critical focus.
