Do/Would you encourage your child to believe in Santa Clause?

no....but my first child might be another 8yrs away..so maybe my mindset might change;p ...

I'd say believe in the goodness of santa clause
and not that he sends presents.
kids nowadays are smarter
and they know that you bought them the presents from a store.
we do not have fire places and santa cannot come in from the rubbish chute.
if he parked his sledge below sure kena fined.

no need to encourage nor discourage. the media and books would have bombarded in their little minds a long time ago. besides, the children will outgrow this phase of their life and will realise the reality in their own time.

Xmas loses it's appeal once you know that Santa doesn't exist so I would encourage my future kids to believe. Some of my happiest childhood memories are of putting out mince pies and sherry on Christmas Eve and waking to find Santa had visited! Now he just leaves a hangover ;p
No preference for me. I let my little one (she's only three) discover the truth as she grows older. At the meantime, I'll tell her all the goodness this world has to offer. 
A discussion about the belief in Santa Clause is meaningless without the understanding about the meaning of Christmas.
Obviously, Santa Clause, as the old bearded gentleman in the red suit with flying reindeer is a synthesised character. However, it has become the very public face of Christmas for a secular population who are unwilling/unable to deal with the real significance of the season. For those who celebrate the occasion, you will hardly hear Santa being mentioned during a service or a Christmas gathering. OTOH, the other "person", i.e. the reason for Christmas, gets mentioned a lot.
Just because Santa (as in the commercialised TV friendly version) does not exist, does not mean that the reason for Christmas is false. IOW, I will neither encourage nor discourage any belief in this "commercial" Santa, as it merely serves as a secular symbol for the occasion, but rather, will emphasis and teach my children about the meaning of Christmas.

Nope no santa clause. He is just a distraction, commericallising everything. It is a season of true giving, the giving of oneself, more than just gifts and toys

To many, especially non-Christians, Christmas is simply a time where gifts are exchanged. Meaning changes over time. What Sriram said is very accurate in today's context. The commercialism, Macdonalization and Westernization make us believe in a non-existent mood during the December period. I am disgusted at the way the government portrays the merry mood of Christmas with all the snowy things you see on SBS, all the decorations in shopping centres. All that is wanted is just revenue spending...

I waited for Santa Clause to give me a camera for so long and it never happens. Now, I have to go and spend one myself :angry:

truly agree. Christmas is about hope, giving & love.
Giving not so much of material goods, but in terms of time and love.
Spending and sharing quality time with love ones and sharing the joy and happiness together.
