A woman in Tennessee had a rather comical run-in with her DMV recently. After renewing her license online, the driver’s license she received in the mail featured a photo of an empty chair instead of her portrait. The mistake has since gone viral on social media.
After receiving her new driver’s license in the mail, Jane Dodd of Hickman County, Tennessee posted a photo of the ID card on Facebook because… well… you can see for yourself:
The post quickly went viral, earning over 5.1K reactions and 20K shares as of this writing and putting the Hickman County DMV into an embarrassing national spotlight. The mistake is so unusual that, according to Dodd, the lady at the local DMV didn’t actually believe her at first.
Despite the comedy of this particular error, the fact that an official, government-issued photo ID went out with a picture of an empty chair is actually kind of problematic. For Dodd it’s just a bit of humor, but the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security had to issue an official statement in response:
“When the customer visited the Driver Services Center a few years ago, during the transaction, an examiner made an error by capturing and saving the wrong photo (of an empty chair) to the customer’s profile,” explained the department to local news station WKRN. “When the customer recently renewed her driver license online, she received an image of a chair because that was the last picture taken on file.”
Ms. Dodd received her corrected driver’s license in the mail Monday and the department has “addressed the situation internally,” so no harm no foul. But if you’ve ever sent a client the wrong photos, this should offer you a bit of comfort… or maybe just comic relief.
