Today i took a generic plastic lens cap and cut out a rectangular hole in the middle. So i saved myself some money by making a small compact lens hood for my 40mm f2 lens. What do you guys think?

I used paper.

Here's the link for the design of these lens hood:

I used a plastic lens cap since the normal lens hood does not cover the cropped sensor well enough and the profile is smaller. The plastic lens cap also provides some protection to knocks.

this is a fix focal lens, don't need tho have tulip shape design, btw, the inside can't be white color, will defeat the purpose of having a lens shade.
IMHO, tulip/petal design is good for wide angle lens. Fix focal lens will gain more with good design (and accurate calculation) tulip shape lens hood. But not for tele lens, because if you want to make accurate tulip/petal lens hood, the lens hood will become very long.

I agree with you to have black colour inside the lens hood.

Arto.

Anyway I made it of white paper as I was testing it out. If I actual were to make one I'll use black cardboard paper.

Wait till you see mine. A irregular rectangle with jagged edges in the center of a lens cap. Looks like a broken lens cap. Definitely put off anyone who wants to steal it.
