Hi guys,

I am asked to shoot a dinner and dance, is it possible to use 70-200 f2.8 is usm L for such event ?

there will be external speakers and long service award presentation that night.

I am thinking between 17-55mm f2.8 and/or 70-200 is usm f2.8.

Please shed some light on me.

Bring both and rent another body with an extra flash.

If not possible, I would say 17-55mm

i have 2 bodies, but 1.6x cropped frame.

i am able to mount both lens and bring 2 bodies i have 2 flash also.

so u think i should bring both jus incase ?

Since you have 2 bodies and 2 flashes, why not make use of them?

D&D will also have a lot of people requesting for group shots, etc, so it will be better to have the 17-55 mounted on your main camera. Just bring along the 70-200, but I think you will hardly need to use it.

what do u think if i mount 17-55 and 24-105, will be better right ?

24-105 nt really performing under low light.

1 body with 17-55 and 1 with 70-200 is a gd combo to go. I know it's heavy but that's event coverage for u. ;)

hmm, incase something happen, i will pop my 50 1.8 out, for fast recovery.. haha

bring everything, why leave it to chance?

its not about how heavy or cumbersome the bag gonna be, on location can find
means to solve minor issues.
You are doing a paid job.
A well done paid job leads to more.

Moments can never be repeated.

When comes to events, big or small, important or not, try not to take chance. :)

hmm, yes dont take chance.. totally agree, there is no second time.

because i owned only 17-55, so i was thinking to loan 70-200 or 24-105.

as i have not seen the place yet, due to last minute invitation.. I am afraid if the ballroom is not very big, then i loaned 70-200 will be a waste. But, if happened that the place is big, dont think 17-55 will be able to cover so much. Especially VIP speakers and prize presentation.

that's the main issue i am puzzled over now.

Uh. You could always move yourself and crop as required

hmm, which means i just need to bring 17-55, and if needed, crop.

If you are right in front of the stage, 17-55mm would be more than sufficient to get a good tight shot I guess

hmm, really thanks everyone for the ideas here and there.

I guess I know what to do already.

hope things go fine that day.

Bringing whatever essential is not key. Learning how to use them with proper flash techniques is the real insurance to getting some pretty pictures. For eg, having a 1dsmiii with 1635mii + 85f1.2 and 580exii may not guarantee good prints.

IMHO, understanding the usage of flash during a fast moving event is not easy. Learn to use the flash and body in manual mode. You may end up with more consistent results.
