Could anyone explain what's the technical difference between the number of photo detectors and effective pixels sometimes stated in the specifications of certain digital cameras? Normally, the number of photo dectectors are a little higher than the number of effective pixels.

just a small explaination from my semiconductor course. nothing is perfect, there are always a certain amount of defects in the semiconductor itself. hence forth. i'm sure there are better explainations out there.

Not all of a digital camera's photosites are used to capture the image. Some of the CCD area is used to take dark current readings and other calibration functions. Hence the discrepancy between total and effective pixels.
