Difference between marco lens & macro filter

Hi newbie question. What is the different between marco lens and marco filter?

the price and quality

it would be better to use a dedicated macro lens 1:1 (none of that psudo macro stuff)
or an extension tube on a normal lens

you could also reverse mount your lens

A lens is a proper lens, with a few elements, and mounts to your camera.

A filter is like you UV filter, its a piece of glass that acts as a magnifying glass.

If you are using a SLR, go for the lens. If its a point and shoot, you can only use a filter, or you can try reverse mounting a normal lens.

I would suggest the opposite since based on the way you spell macro and the nature of your question, you may not be sure how often you will use macro. Try the macro filter first... its cheap and quality is acceptable. If you find yourself using heavy macro in the future, then you can buy a macro lens and probably lose $50 bucks (exclusive of reselling the filter and the learning factor). But the opposite could end up a white elephant for you.
