Wat are the difference between the old Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Super (Gold Ring)

&

the new Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Super II (Red Ring)?

Faster focus? More silent mechanism?

I'm using the Gold ring 70-300mm F/4-5.6 ... Not sure whether it's faster on the newer one... but It's not exactly silent :)

I could let you test it out if you wan... :p

I own the gold ring version.

It can do Macro at 200mm to 300mm leh.
So is mine considered the APO II? ;p

And some more here:

Macro feature difference:

1st version (gold ring): maximum magnify ratio: 1:2, but only at 300mm side
2nd versoin (red ring): maximum magnify ratio: 1:2.9, can do macro from 200 to 300mm, it's 1:2.9 at 300mm side, 1:5.x at 200mm.

Optical difference:

2nd version has some improvement on the glass, that's what I heard, not really sure.

Both are quite decent and cheap lenses. Buy either one and you won't regret for the price you pay.

Cheers!

Hiee...

The first version...(gold ring) only macro at 300mm.
Newer version macro at 200-300mm

Both do maximum macro of 1:2

Both uses the same glasss....as far as my own experiences...
Body design changes for slimmer focus ring....
Both still 58mm FIlter diameter...

gold ring versions may also sometimes need rechipping. Its better to get the red ring version to be on the safe side

Ehhh.. I have the gold ring version.. my Macro is from 200mm to 300mm leh...

I'm not quite sure on the maximum macro ratio for the newer version though. Last weekend I saw two Canon guys using the newer version, the maxium macro ratio is 1:2.9

It does 1:2 at 300mm on the Super II when you switch on the macro mode.

Nice lens, extremely good contrast, colour and definition for what's essentially a budget lens. I feel this lens delivers more than what you pay for.

Aperture a little too slow for me though (understandable for the price).

If you guys are interested in a Canon EF mount APO Super II, PM me. Still have substantial warranty period on it.

The 70-300 at f5.6 output is better than the Sigma 70-200 + 1.4x at f5.6.....(this(70-300) is a very good lens for sunrise/sunset...where you wnat to have a sun ball in photo.....do not use this lens with UV filter attached......lots of image gradation is by UV filter.....)
