Hi,

I've just received an old B&W glass plate negative (i think it's 4x5in) of my late grandparents with their children.
Needless to say, this is of great sentimental value to my family

Could anyone offer some advice on where I could print out such photos?

Other advice on how to preserve this treasured item would be also greatly appreciated.
It spent most of its life placed in a tattered paper bag but the emulsion seems minimally affected.

Thanks in advance!

try some lab on Contact prints or darkroom process will be good

A quick-n-dirty method -

Position your plate in front of some evenly distributed light source. The light must shine through the frame and shine evenly. If need be, hang a piece of tracing paper in front of the light to further diffuse it.

Use your sharpest lens set around f/8 or thereabouts on your digital system and take a photo of it. A small prime like 50 f/1.8 or macro lens if you have one is great for this kind of reproduction work. Tripod is recommended if your shutter speeds are too low.

You will now have a negative image. Invert it in Photoshop and you have a digital copy.. :) just about any place will be able to print it now.

Best option is to find a shop with a sufficiently large enlarger and traditional darkroom to handle the negative but this method will allow you to enjoy the image while you look around for one.

I can scan it digitally and burnt the file onto a DVD for a small fee if you may. Each file from a 4x5 negative is approximate 1-2 GB.

I have done on coloured and b&w glass slides with cleaning and touching up after scanning. Glass negative is not a problem.Contact me for a quote if you are interested.

Regards.
