Dedicated Flash For Starter

Own a D40 kit with 50mm f1.8. Saving up for a dedicated flash. Which model is good for a beginner like myself ?

SB 400 ? SB 600 ? or SB 800? or is there any other 3rd party flash unit that are better than the Nikon ones ?

go get SB-800 directly so you wont be needing to upgrade later on unless nikon release a new model.

If you can afford, just go for the SB-800. Don't be intimidated by it being the top-of-the-range flash, as with flash, once you've realised your less powerful flash is limiting, you'll want to upgrade.

However, if you cannot afford, the SB-600 is probably your next best choice. For a beginner, the SB-400 may be a little too limited, as it has no swivel for ceiling bounce in portrait orientation (the SB-400 can only do ceiling bounce when in landscape orientation).

Well, what would you mainly use it for?

If u just want a flash put on top of D40 and shoot then SB600 is good enough, cheaper by $100+. But if u intend to learn off camera flash and Nikon's Creative Lighting System in future, then SB800 is a better investment for long term.

also to note that sb600 are made in china while sb800 are made in japan...

Well I m considering the SB-400 as I m mobile most of the time. Most of my photos do not required flash . . . but I will be taking picture for family events like dinner and birthday celebrations. So i tot a entry level flash might be good for such small events. Any comments on that ? BTW anyone knows the price range for SB-400 /600 /800 ?
