Hi all,

I thought I would post some photos from my new DA*60-250 f4 for anyone who is interested. These are not the brick wall or test chart type test photos, but "real world" photos of subjects that we may all like to take photos of.

I went down to a local lake and took photos of some local birdlife and these are the results. If anyone is loking for a lens around this zoom range, then the DA*60-250 f4 is superb, IMO. Excellent sharpness, bokeh (for a zoom), colour rendition and the handling is very good.

I have the DA*50-135 f2.8 and the FA*80-200 f2.8 as well, and I think that both of them will rarely get used now that I have this lens. I can save 1.1kg in weight by only having the DA*60-250 and also a spot in my camera bag!

There is no doubt that the FA*80-200 f2.8 is a stellar lens, but the DA*60-250 f4 looks like it may be able to match it.

Highly recommended.

Thank you for posting these, Lance. I tried this briefly when Mark was in town, and I was pleasantly surprised at its size and weight (in a good way). I actually didn't really feel that it's that big especially if the hood's off.

The focusing is surprising fast as well, at least my 1st experience in a pretty badly litted room with a K20D. If I've not been targetting the FA*200mm, I may have just got this instead.

Hey Lance. I knew you are gonna post some good sample photos by this lens, but I didn't expect they'd be ssoooo good. That lens seems to be a great performer, of course when it's in the right hands :)

You made me wanna change my F*300/4.5 to this zoomy ...

F*300mm... ;p

Wow,

Your super 60-250mm make me much want to buy this good lense. Time for me to save up until buy this. Thank you for posting your super images....:thumbsup::thumbsup:

One question is I wonder if this 60-250mm with K20D can catch fast moving objects like F1???

Come on Mr. LBA, I want to see the shootout between 60-250 and 300 @ f4. :bsmilie:

Thanks for sharing and very beautiful photos. I find the lens would be even nicer if it is IF but overall, it is definitely a lens worth consider getting for it’s performance.

Des, IF would be lovely, but from another point of view, at least it's smaller to keep in the bag.

Hi,

Would you be able to handheld this lens? How low is the shuttle before one needs to use a tripod at the long end?

W/ the new K-7 camera, no problem handheld shooting at 1/60s on the 250mm end:

Or even 1/20s:

Thank you and it is a pleasure to post them. I hope that this will help people to decide whether this lens is suitable for them.

As usual, Frank, you are way too kind. :) Thank you very much for your nice comments, mate.

Don't be too hasty, my friend. There is one small issue with the DA*60-250 f4 and that is that when you focus on a close subject and you are extended to 250mm, the lens is not really 250mm when focused close, more like 200mm. So, of you want reach *and* to focus close, then keep your F*300 as it is a gem too. I am keeping my 300. :)

I have yet to try this on fast moving subject matter. I will try this over the coming weeks and hopefully report back.

It is Internal Focus, just not Internal Zoom. I do not think that it the fact that it is not Internal Zoom is too much of a problem, for me anyway.

I think that Pentax decided to not make it an Internal Zoom because it would compromise quality and also add to cost and probably weight. I am quite happy that they made this decision.

Hi,

Would you be able to handheld this lens? How low is the shuttle before one needs to use a tripod at the long end?

All these shots were handheld, with SR on.

With SR on, you should be able to get down to about 1/30sec at 250mm with practice and a stationary subject and reasonably easily at 1/60sec. The first photo in the 3rd set of images was handheld at 1/80sec and as you can see by the crop, it is razor sharp!

The rule of thumb is 1/focal length x 1.5. So, for a 200mm lens this is 1/200x1.5 = 1/300sec. With SR, you can easily get 2 stops and with practice 3 stops slower shutter speed. If you are very careful, you can get up to 4 stops depending on the lens. So, with the same 200mm lens, then 2 stops - 1/200 x 1.5 = 1/300 sec, then 1/150sec, then 1/75sec. For 3 stops - 1/200 x 1.5 = 1/300 sec then 1/150 sec, then 1/75 sec, then 1/38sec.
