Update: mine is working perfectly fine now, no more startup problems, and AF silently and smoothly like my 16-50. SDM motor was changed in Japan as you said.

Hope to still receive impeccable service from Kevin in future!

In my case (a DA1650 w/ defect SDM), the invoice said the SDM motor was changed

Yup, not in great detail though. Basically SDM motor was faulty, and to repair simply involved changing SDM motor. I think it's the same for skypacker.

Is the SDM problem an early batch problem or random?

Shall we track by the batch or serial number? If it is an early batch problem, it is not a problem as long as we don't buy those with low serial numbers but if it is random then I will probably stay off SDM lenses for now.

Yeah, Luckily it's under International Warranty. Had it serviced last Aug, the lens took a 3 weeks quick trip to JP, it's been working great ever since

May we can ask Emjay to help answer those questions and perhaps ask them to ask Pentax if there are any specific care for SDM lenses and cost of replacing the motor. Emjay...?
