D90 noob:DOF preview

Hi,
I noticed that DOF is already visible through the viewfinder..so what is that button at front of camera for? thks...

The viewfinder does not show a stopped down depth of field unless you press the DOF preview button(assuming you are referring to this button).

Different aperture values give you different DOF. Try setting f/22 and click the button.

The lens is always at it's brightest aperture even when you change it so that the image in the viewfinder is bright. When you take a shot, then it will change to the selected aperture. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The lens will close down to the selected aperture at the point of taking the photo.
