Hey ppl, i was thinking of getting 2nd hand d70 body and pairing it with a tamron 28-200mm lens , jus wondering if my thoughts is on the right track? Can anyone advise me? I only have a budget of $500 :cry:

Not sure how much is the 28-200mm
it largely depends on what you usually shoot.
for me, it is not wide enough
i owned the tamron 28-200 before. it's a nice lens honestly, but it doesnt cover the wide angle prospect. no problem if you dont mind moving back a few steps, but for me, it was rather frustrating.
if you have a limited budget, get the d70 and pair it with an 18-55 lens. the cost of 2nd hand d70 is roughly $400 and 18-55 NON VR is $70-$100

Hmmm from what i see so far from nikon B/S section, d70 body is around $400. So i personally think that your budget of $500 abit not enough.
The tamrom 28-200 will definitely be a good start for street+candid/nature+sceneries shots but i think it is quite expensive, i would suggest that you can get a nikkor 18-55 first cause it is cheaper.

with that budget you can get the d70 with a 18-55mm kit lens..

Wow! I started off with exactly that. A Nikon D70 and a Tamron 28-200mm f/3.5-f/5.6. It's the 72mm one... Haha.
It's a versatile combination, although it's shortcomings may grow obvious with time. Yet, I cannot deny that it is a value-for-money combination.
Other lenses you may consider will be:
1. Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II
2. Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
3. Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G
4. Nikon AF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
5. Nikon AF 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G

just one photo... i used it for NDP practice back when i volunteered to stay on as photographer (bah!)
photo taken with nikon d70... f8 if i remembered rightly.. Iso 200 @ 150 or 200mm
it's a great lens
i would have kept mine but sold it as i needed the $$

yep! get it .. a d70 is a great camera. although i would recommend a d50 as it's newer and better noise , but the d70 has greater functions than the d50.
for instance, the commander mode on the d70 :heart:
pair it up with the sb-600 and walah! you have a TTL combo :lovegrin: (this function of Commander mode is missing in the d50, hence i love the d70)
once you use the 28-200, you just might need wide angle lens, but stepping a few metres back wont kill you too

i had 2 28-200mm Tamrons. Yes 2 lenses. 1 was working well while the other the AF spoilt, hence manual focusing. depends on what you shoot , i use my 18-55 more often as i prefer wider angled shots...

My suggestion to you is, get the most basic and shoot more. when you encounter limitations or you have used up the lens to its fullest potential THEN move on to other lenses. my very first nikon lens isnt mentioned here. it was the 35-70mm lens . i used it on my first DSLR , the Fuji S1Pro. then i realised i had not much wide angle and sold it, got my 18-55 and its my primary lens, my most often used lens. the good point about the 28-200 is the reach. also, i love it because its "long" ... making it look pro ahahahaha

Cheers... if you have more budget, look for a 18-70, this is the best kit lens which can be paired with the D70.
next up, look for the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or 28-75 f2.8. Both are about $400-500 second hand and would be a good tool to work with.
