I got my D40.. as a starter... not much budget.
what else do i need to have?? or know?

Most important thing you need to know is that ONLY AFS (for Nikon), HSM (for sigma) lenses can be use with autofocus functions on the D40.

AFS not AIS?
Sorry but dont know the different terms...yet

If you got money, get a SB-400 flash (not expensive). Then when you take photos for people, use bounce flash and you'll be surprised how nice your photos can be....

AFS = Autofocus Silent Wave motor
AIS = Automatic Indexing with Shutter priority (this is a manual lens started from 1981)

since your on a budget here are my suggestions for your D40kit:

1. sb400 - indoor photos/bounce flash
2. 55-200(VR/non-VR) - close-up w/ more bokeh portraits/photos/sports
3. filters - close-up(for macro)/IR/UV/CPL/GND(landscape photos)
4. wireless remote - nice to have for macro, self portrait, group shot(includes u),nightscape,if u dont feel hitting the shutter button..
5. tripod - for me I invest for a sturdy/solid cheap/not ex tripod like benro @ $120 cheapest

good luck and happy shooting!!
