spore not much natural chance to justify usage of pro-class mountain bikes..but street bikes n gear more applicable? what do u guys think.

Yeah! cycle and shoot in Ubin, the perfect combi, however gotta be a good cyclist, you don't want any mishap on your camera " it's ok if i fall but not my camera".

I'm riding an old model of GT Zaskar. Even though it's has a 7-speed cassette and cantilever brakes, it holds up to the abuse that it gets when I go to the Bukit Timah trails.
But to answer your question, MTBs are as expensive as you want them to be. IMHO, disc brakes are not that necessary, unless you ride on wet and muddy terrain most of the time. Nevertheless, higher-end bikes are now equipped with disc brakes. And since you want a light bike, I suspect it's likely to be in the high-end ($1.8k and above), and you'll get disc brakes anyway.
I'd stick to more reputable brands (not in any order of merit):
Kona
Cannondale
GT
Giant (not to be confused with the Giant hypermart)
Schwinn
Rocky Mountain
Specialist
Marin
Trek
Gary Fisher
... the list goes on

I'd go for the Cannondale as build is very good but it comes at a price. My suggestion is, go take a look at the Kula.

Most mtb no light, must buy one like that. Before we go ( if we go) we have to consider these factor ( no offence here, we are photographer first and cyclist 2nd A) the prefer route b) Day and time C) Duration 4) Getting there 5) Leader etc. Importantly your fitness level cos those lagging behind must at least be able to know where to meet or takes alternative routes.
Anyway which is the best routes?

4) East Coast park
5) Pasir Ris park
6) Ubin
7) Sentosa
