Err...it's not Crop factor of the lens...more like the camera.
(then again..the Term "crop factor" isnt the right term to use...lol)
Different camera system have different figures
Nikon = 1.5x (exception D2X on 6MP has a 2.0x)
Canon = 1.6x (mostly, Exception 1D = 1.3x, 1Ds = 1x)
Konica Minolta = 1.5x
Olympus Four-Thirds = 2.0
Pentax = 1.5
...etc
so a typical 50mm lens will be
1.5x = 75mm on Nikon camera
1.6x = 80mm on Canon
2.0x = 100mm on Olympus 4/3 systems
1.3x = 65mm on a Canon 1D
1.0x = and no change (50mm) on a 1Ds/1Ds Mark II
You need cropping sometimes its becos the Non-DSLR cameras, are mostly in 4:3 format, whereas, a 4R photo (4x6) is in a 3:2 ratio.
Most SLR and higher end cameras can do a 3:2 ratio, makes the photos printed to be excatly the same ratio as the image captured.
If ur pics are in 4:3, you have to edit them in programs like Photoshop or get the shop to Print w/o crop (white border) or The pic will be cut off at the top and bottom by a bit.
