I have to admit, I gave up on MS Outlook long ago even though I own a lega copy of it. I have spend a lot of my time using web mail applications even though they are more painful they are way way more secure especially if one runs his business from his notebook

Any idea of a reasonable featured e-mail application but more secure than MS Outlook?

As for giving up on IE, not the time really, as long as you surf safely it is unlikely that you will be hit by a malicious virus, that is: visit only decent - known sites, which is the same as real life really: If you go in the backlanes of some cities you do put your life at risk!

Marios are you around in Singapore? Long time since you left KRDL/ISS isn't it?

Email client : I use mozilla mail, thunderbird is supposed to be more up to date. I like mozilla because it supports S/MIME / X.509 for encryption / decryption and certs, it supports PGP/GPG via the enigmail plugin, and it has been extremely robust and stable and secure, I've been using this for years.

As for browsing, Mozilla / firefox is good, but I bought Opera (http://www.opera.com/). Its speed is truly unmatched. The in caching is blinding fast, it will make mozilla/IE/firefox look like a snail on a slow day.

Actually firefox is faster than opera but it has to be optimised before it blazing speeds show :think:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

The above are basic settings

Windows XP loads Firefox very slowly. You can speed this up by using Windows XP Prefetcher. Click with the right mouse button on the shortcut that you use to open Firefox. Click on Preferences. After Target you add the following text: /Prefetch:1.
Example:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /Prefetch:1

Actually, most of these tweaks can be made to opera too. Prefetching is on by default. I've been using it since opera 3.62, and it has always been as fast or faster than FF/Moz. Try keeping 5-6 tabs open and doing a lot of forward / backward / browsing on all tabs. Opera just flies, FF and Moz slow down.
