I own a D50, but as good as not owning one as I don't know how to use it at all except for the menu functions and various buttons.:embrass:
For starters, are there any threads explaining on how to take portrait shots, macro and all?

#1, Google search, basic photography.
#2, National Library, books of basic photography.

Both methods are free, but need a lot of free time from you.

RTFM (Read The Friendly Manual) :nono: .

Arto.

go internet and look? I believe there are tons of resources.

take already, give gurus here a chance to see? they will give comments

Welcome to CS

Best is to join outings where you can learn from others in the field. You can ask any photography related question (sometimes non related) and will get good replies. Morever you get to try out the specialised lenses and accessories from other members before buying your own. eq Macro lens.

I learn a lot and still learns from outings. However, beware of the BBB virus.

Have fun and shoot more

Shoot more, and experiment, that's the beauty of digital.

When everything goes wrong, try to find solutions or ask around. It worked for me ;)

Great advice.

Best is still to go out and shoot more, cause you already know how to operate the camera. Shoot more, review and see which photos you like and don't like. then ask and find solutions. Reading books from the library or search the internet only give you theory. Practise makes perfect.

find a pro photographer, ask him/her to teach you.

offer to buy someone coffee .. :)

Yap, agree with you on this.

PSS offers a wide varieties of courses and the instructors there are quite nice too.

If not, just go out and shoot more, you will learn from there too.
