Company Event at a Pub.... what lens and settings should i use?

Hi guys, need your expert advice....

I am using a D40X with SB600 and Kit Lens. I need to help my boss to get some pics out for the event. What lens should i get and what settings should i use..?

please explain in a simple manner as i am still a newbie :embrass:
