Combination Of Lenses

Dear all, would like to start a thread to discuss about best combination of lenses (DX & FX lenses). As title mentioned, I would like to discuss about:

1) Best combination of lenses possible.
2) Value for money.
3) Possible planning to move to fullframe in the future. Therefore the type of lenses suggested, hopefully can be used in fullframe in the future. For wide, if no choice, have to stick to whatever available, take an example 11-16, heard good review about this.

Would like to suggest the following:

Wide: Tokina 11-16 mm (not sure can be used on fullframe?)
Walkabout: 18-55 (or any suggestion)
Zoom: 70-200 or 80-200 (what are the differences beside pricing?)

Prime:
Sigma 30mm 1.4
50mm f1.8
85mm f1.8 (1.4 a bit on the higher price)
105mm ? (for macro purpose)

Any related suggestion/ discussion are welcome.

Also, would like to ask, is there any trinity lenses? :devil:

get lenes based on what you need, and the style you shoot.
do not get lenses to cover most of the focal length.

The tokina 11-16 does not work on fullframe.
value for money? depends on you, my value for $$ does not mean your value of $$
Wide angle that work on FF? you can consider the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG HSm, or Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G IF ED, both not as wide as the tokina on crop, but are full-frame lenses.

Walkabout lens? it depends on what you shoot. recently there was a thread asking about the same question as well.
Some use wide-zoom, mid-range zoom, tele-zoom, primes, (I like to use 35mm prime). Only you know what lens would suit you for walk about.

70-200 vs 80-200?
A simple google search will give you the ans.
1. AF-S vs AF-D/AF-S(discontinued)
2. VR/VRII vs non-VR
3. 70mm vs 80mm
4. Removable tripod collar leg vs non-removable tripod collar leg
5. Petal lens hood vs round lens hood (if that matters)
6. Faster focusing vs slower focusing (for AF-D), not sure on the AF-S vs AF-S version.

As for primes, the lens you listed are of different focal length and characteristics.
Choose a focal length that suits your style, and look at the options you have a that focal length.
And this would be affected, when you switch from crop bodies to fullframe bodies.

The so called Nikon Trinity are:
1. Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G IF ED
2. Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G IF ED
3. Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF ED VR/VRII

1) There is no 'best'. Different people will prefer different setups. This is because different people shoot differently, and have different needs in terms of focal length and max aperture.

2) & 3) Value for money != FX lenses on DX body.

When you talk about value for money, it is never value for money when you use FX lenses on DX bodies. FX lenses are so much more expensive. And in fact depreciation will be bigger in absolute numbers, since it is a percentage of a larger amount of money. Might as well get some used DX lenses. Use them until you are ready to move to FX, then sell all the DX glass, and then get the FX glass when you have a FX body.

As for specific lenses, there are only preferred lenses. I would be reluctant to call any lens "the best". There is no such thing.

Some preferred lenses (in no particular order):

DX:
UWA: N10-24, Sig 10-20, Tok 11-16
Standard zoom: N18-55, N18-105, N18-70, N16-85, N17-55, Tam17-50, Sig17-50.
Standard zoom (less wide): N24-70, N24-120/4vr
All-in-one zoom: N18-200vr2, Tam18-270, Sig18-250
Tele-zoom: N55-200vr, N55-300vr, N70-300vr, N80-200/2.8D, N70-200vr2
Primes: N50/1.8, N50/1.4(D&G), N35/1.8, N85/1.8D, N85/1.4D
Macro: N60/2.8, N105/2.8vr, N200/4, Tam90/2.8.

FX:
UWA: N16-35, N17-35, N14-24
Standard zoom: N24-70, N24-120/4vr
All-in-one zoom: N28-300
Tele-zoom: N70-300vr, N80-200/2.8D, N70-200vr2
Primes: N50/1.8, N50/1.4(D&G), N85/1.8D, N85/1.4D, N105/2DC, N135/2DC

Oh.. okay, thanks bro. I think last time I remember to see thread about this combination. Now I recall, too pricey, then automatically forgot!

I've used both, and current on the 70-200VR1

Both have great IQ, and personally, i don't find that as one of the factor to consider when deciding which of those 2 lenses to get.

Tried both before, and tried shooting for long hrs carrying the 70-200mm around. I find that the VR can be pretty helpful. IQ both are pretty equivalent.

1) Best combination of lenses possible.
-> Everyone has different needs and ability (in terms of financial and weight of equipment).
It will be nice to have the trinity lens whenever you are out for a shoot but in reality it will be too heavy and changing the lens can be a hassle.
Thus, best combination of lens - depends on what you are shooting. Look thru ur photos - do u really zoom in on portraits or you prefer environmental shots.

2) Value for money.
-> erm... i dun even know where to begin. Everyone sees value differently

3) Possible planning to move to fullframe in the future. Therefore the type of lenses suggested, hopefully can be used in fullframe in the future. For wide, if no choice, have to stick to whatever available, take an example 11-16, heard good review about this.
-> if you are planning to move into fullframe why not get the standard zoom lens to begin with.
this is the most usable focal length most photographers would use. (unless you prefer a certain style that requires a certain focal length, only you will know)

in conclusion if you are planning to move into FX, stop buying DX lenses and start saving.

I am aiming to buy the D7000 once it is available in singapore. i am not going into Pro, therefore to me DX is good enough. On the other hand I would like to get a good clear lens in Wide zoom, Prime + Macro and tele-zoom at much later date.

Nikon, Tamron or any thrid party lens no issue for me so long it gives good result I guess good IQ. So I do not need to regret and buy another one and another one later. I can save up say every 2 to 3 months to get a quality lens.

Any recommendation for the 3 minimum quality lenses i am aiming for with the D7000?

Old man can not hold up too many equipment and hold steady with long zoom. Now I have E-P1 system, weight is most ideal but see no clear direction in the development so decided to switch camp to Nikon and give the whole set to children. 9-18, 20, 14-42 and 45-200mm lenses.

Hi, Bro, i think hard to compromise on weight if you want to have good lens. It's an optic thing. So, if you want something light, some other bros will suggest to trim down your overall setup, maybe even to choose D5k or D3.1k etc. If you want to use 18-200 with D7k, maybe is kinda waste for D7k body. Weight wise, you can check.

If you are talking about the AF-D 80-200 (before the AF-S version but still in production) vs the AF-S 70-200 VRII lens... the older 80-200 just couldn't cut it when shooting at max. aperture at f/2.8.

Don't know what you shoot. Also don't know your style. Neither am I sure what "best" means.

But I do have some ideas on what lenses I wanna get (or keep) for myself if I'm to cover a wide range.

Wide: 14-24mm f/2.8 (zoom is absolutely necessary for wideangle imo)
PC-E: 24mm f/2.8D
Normal: 50mm f/1.4G
Macro: 60mm f/2.8G and/or 200mm f/4D
Short tele: 135mm f/2D DC
Tele: 300mm f/4 AF-S (I can imagine myself carrying this but not anything bigger)

Of the lenses I've mentioned, I've personally owned only 3 and have never tried the PC-E before so this list is just a... list. :sweat:

May I know whether Tammy have better picture quality compare to 18200VR. Is it practical to abandon 200mm during the traveling? (basically I will only bring one lens for my trip.)
