Clicking noise in auto mode on lens.

Hi everyone...I am back after a long absence from posting, but I have been in here reading and learning. I have a Nikon D90 and am practicing with my Nikon 70-300mm vr lens. My question to all you experts...and I know you are here, is...when the camera is in the auto mode, and I press the shutter half way down, I hear a clicking. Is this normal? Would appreciate any help...just in case I need to send this lens back. (It seems like the motor is working to focus?) Otherwise, works great and what a fabulous lens!
