hey guy, need some opinion and advice. This photo taken with D40X while my two nieces were playing.

Looks more like a snapshot to me.
The background is messy with the TV and fan.
Showing the subject's armpit is not very flattering even if its a kid.
I know it hard but try to get the kids to look at you. Capture the innocence of a child thru their eyes. If possible, go outdoor where the natural light is great for shooting fast moving kids. The background would be nicer too.

u captured the moment faithfully.

this shot wun win any competition. but cherish it. i am sure years later, they will look at it w fond memories.

perhaps, such is the soul of photography.

:) happy children, you captured the moment indeed.

I would predict that you use direct pop-up flash?
This caused the background to be dark while subject (the kids) to be bright & reflective.
Can try to invest on a hot shoe flash (SB-600 perhaps) & bounce the flash to the ceiling to have soft balanced lightings...
It will give you a totally different shot...
PS: Flash can make your shot become outstanding but it can also destroy your shot... So, use wisely...
:) Happy photographing...
