Cheap Macro solution by sunkist.

Anyone ever use a magnifyling glass to marco ur object? I understand the marco distance for no zoom is 5 cm and with a full zoom of 12X (i must maintain a distance of 200cm (2m), But with this manifyling (my father use it as reading aid). i can roughly reduce the 200cm(2m) to abt 15cm when using 12X zoom.

I will follow up and see if it good for some marco shot. Meantime below is my setup photos. Pls do guide me thru the testing. thanks all!

I think i figure out something but then again, the magnifying glass is jus a cheap solution which comfirm will degrade the quality of the photo. But i am trying it out.

As below, all done in 5MP, marco mode, no flash, and a WD (working distance of 15cm). Image are resize to 300 X 400 w/o cropping.

Not bad for a cheap solution. Anyway I will be bringing a +3 and a +4 micro filters for tomorrow. Anyway one who want to try can get the filters from me.

This is a bit off-topic, but since the subject of macro filters came up... I would like some advice. As a beginner, what should I get first? A +3, +4 filter? What about the brand and estimated price?

I probably should try filters first before venturing into reverse lenses -- learn how to crawl first :sweat: .

You may use either one or stack both to get higher magnification. However, is there a +3?

can see that there's quite a but of CA in the shots. close-up filters would give you better results. to reduce the focussing distance to 15 cm, you need roughly a +7 which can be formed by stacking a +4 with a +3. A +4 will give you 25cm focussing distance (divide 100cm by the power (added together)).

The usual Hoya ones have a single element. Canon and Nikon make dual elements close-up filters that gives better results but at a higher price (Canon ones are much more expensive than Nikon's).

CA = chromatic aberration

This kind of effect will show you a bluish (think most visible one is the blue portion right? Sorry if i'm wrong) outline on your objects, like the blue portion on the top left of your pic. Basically is due to the dispersion of light caused by the lens that causes this artefact.

Thought we are not suppose to zoom, especially up until 12x, when doing macro shot? Isn't zooming makes the minimum distance even longer?

This is what i thought intially also. But then again, if i didnt use the zoom, isnt the FZ20 jus like any digicam? So i guess close-up filter and those specialise lens come up. +4 close-up len will give u a WD of 25cm when using 12Z xoom.

Here is some more photo which i took using my magnifying glass. All is resize to 300X400. No cropping. And is in marco mode.


#1 - working distance of 15cm away from battery without any zoom.

#2 - Working distance of 5cm away from battery with 2 -3 X zoom. (If i did not use any filter, this should be the best result i can get)

#3 - Working distance of 15 cm away from battery with 12X zoom w/ magnifying.

Can see the diff? =)
