1985: 1 is enough, Govt WILL take care of your old age
1995: 1 is enough, Govt help you take care of yourself
2005: Growing old cannot rely on the government
2012: Delay your retirement, take care of yourself

2040: Age based progressive taxes on age 50 and above ;)

Between 1985-2012, its almost 30 yrs... and between that 30yrs

* S'pore suffers from at least 4 economic downturn that I can remember (1986, 1997, 2001, 2003).
* The collapse of Communism.
* The building of 2 Casino in S'pore
* The release of Nelson Mandela
* Both America and South Africa had their first BLACK president
* Opps parties gaining much seats in SG
* Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos joined ASIAN Grouping
* The rise of CHINA
* The weakening of USA
* ETC ETC ETC....

So... situation and time change... so does policies...

Well, when you say "I will take care of you when you are old and meanwhile I need you to do X for me" the understanding is that it is for the long haul. It cannot be that when you actually got old, the other contractual party goes "sorry, things changed. Deal off." Would you trust the same guy who now promises another deal?

Beyond 2012 you're lucky if your retirement fund is enough to see through a comfortable old age.

Better pray that we're fit and healthy enough to be able to do some physical work post-retirement.

Looking at what is happening in Europe... kind of impossible to said 'Long Haul'... :think:

Trust or NOT to Trust... very much up to you... new guy could promised just as much... but may achieve little.

Any word from Lao zi about this? :)

i actually don't mind working after retirement. that's because i can't stand to be doing nothing.

That's what the paper says previously but nowadays, I also don't read from papers as the news aren't real. Believe in what I sees and DTA! (Don't Trust Anyone)

it is a dynamic world.

The best today might not be the best tomorrow.

We need leaders with 6/6 vision.

Someone pointed out to me that this is most likely a PRC newspaper as Singapore's policy was "stop at 2" and that was dropped in the 1980s.

My apologies.
