I was bored, so I decided to borrow a coolpix 995 to see whether I could actually take decent photographs with it Shutter lag was a serious problem so it seemed like a question of shooting a lot of shots and hoping the cat didn't move too much. At least the white of the cat turned out white. No colour adjustment needed.
Coolpix 950/990 has quite a bit of shutter lag, about 1s in dim situations if it can lock focus. If you want fast response, set to MF mode and set to the appropriate approximate distance. At least the Coolpix MF mode has a distance scale. The inherent DoF of the camera should cover slight focussing errors if you use a medium aperture.
