The owners changed their minds.
Singapore Carrefour is here to stay. Can still buy frozen escargot from them.
But those in Thailand sold to Big C chain.

Tough for the workers, who had to live under this Damocles sword for months.
Not knowing will they still have a job if it is sold.

Is NTUC taking up too much market share good for the competition? All these foreign brands will find it unsustainable to operate here. Even your neighbourhood Econ also find it tough. Don't think a second rag to riches like Sheng Siong is possible nowadays.

On the otherhand, we saved a fair bit of money buying from NTUC. So to buy or not to buy?

NTUC is fine. It has done a good job. NTUC, Giant and Shop & Save are meant for the masses. Those who live in heartlands.

NTUC Finest is a higher tier supermarket.

For high end, there is 360 at ION, specialist grocer shops that cater to expats and rich locals e.g. Swiss Butchery, Culina, etc....

Then you got Jasons supermarket.

Sheng Shiong is in a bit of a spot. It took over wet markets thinking it could spin off as something else. But now stuck with a non-operating market and lately got mosquito breeding charges.

Meidiya caters to Japanese clients. Yaohan is gone.

So it is good that some French presence remains. Is Galeries Lafayette still somewhere in Sing?

How come no German or Spanish supermarkets ever set up in Singapore.

Maybe one day China-run supermarket chains will dominate.

how about cold storage ?
i think they are a decent competitor to fair price in the town area.

Cold Storage may be perceived as better than NTUC. Especially for meats.
Some of their stuff seem catered for angmohpai and expat crowd.
Very local stuff is missing. e.g. Giant at IMM sells Song fish heads or Red snapper fish heads.
But cannot find in Cold Storage.
