Try using Spot Metering.

Try exposure compensation +1 and adjust from there ...but u will get over blown background. Best is still use flash to fill and balance the ambient light.

For me I will use the AE Lock button to lock the exposure settings on the dark subject first than recompose your frame. So that the camera will use the exposure settings on the dark subject instead of the bright background. But some times by doing this your subject exposure will be correct but the background may be blown out.

Obviously light is missing. Since the background is already bright, using spot metering will result in horrible overblown background. You could use a reflector to get more light to the person's face, or simply ask the person to turn around and change the composition.

sometimes a blown background can work too.

since TS is only keen to make her subject correct exposed, overblown background may not be her concern, so just meter and exposed for the subject should work for her.

Hi, There is a way professionals will do it, if you are only interested to photograph the person's face/headshot/half or full and not interested to capture window's outside scene then just turn the subject to the side thereby lighting face on one side,now the other half is in shadow,you can use a large white reflector or turn on a light to illuminate the side with the shadow and this gives depth to the face.You can also expose so that the outside is also captured.You will need to compensate for the meter reading.If it's outdoors it is the same method unless the sun is high or noon time so use reflectors accordingly.

Look like a stealth operation. Target must not be beware that he/she is photographed....

Just focus on your subject's face (or any other part of the body you wanted), set exposure to +1 took a shot if still too dark, then set to +2 and so on and so for. Of course you must realise that if you do that, the background will be overexpose.

Best way and method would still be a flash or reflector which can be use to reflect the background light back at the subject.
