CANON'S NEW EOS DIGITAL REBEL ROCKS THE CAMERA
New Digital Rebel/EF-S 18-55 mm Lens Kit Arrives in Stores Around Mid September With An Estimated Selling Price of $999*

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., Aug. 20, 2003 — The Canon EOS Rebel has gone digital. Adding to the world's most popular line of autofocus SLR cameras, the new EOS Digital Rebel combines the quality, affordability and ease of use the Rebel is renowned for with the immediacy, vitality and economy that digital delivers. Sleek and stylish — with a high-grade titanium gray metallic finish — the Digital Rebel puts the power and flexibility of a single lens reflex camera into a compact, light weight, high performance, high resolution 6.3 megapixel package....

This is extraction from an interview, given just days before the launch of the EOS 300D, Alessandro Stanzani talks about the EOS 300D, its role in changing the face of photography and Canon’s passion for the SLR.

Is the EF-S lens the start of a new EF-S series?

The short back focus system of the EOS 300D provided a route for Canon to develop the EF?S 18?55mm - a high performance, low weight, short length, cost effective standard zoom lens for EOS 300D customers. This lens only fits the EOS 300D but, as with all EOS cameras, the EOS 300D fits every lens in the EF range. So when the time comes for EOS 300D customers to consider their next lens, they will share the advantage of every other EOS user by having the whole range of over 60 EF lenses to choose from. This particular EF-S lens is therefore seen as a specialised lens within the EF range. It is the EF range to which we are committed and to which Canon continues to invest substantial development resource.

at US$899 with kit lens, thats only S$1.5k

I think prosumer camera like the SONY DSC-828 @ abt $2k will have difficulties winning buyers over, when a DSLR is cheaper and comes with a starter lens.

I think add a flash for $500, the price will match a top end prosumer camera.

G5 or 300D?

Nikon have to catch up again. :bsmilie: :blah:

notice that the connector cover is flushed with the body, very nice.

i guess this is 1 more reason to dislike Canon. hahahaha :bsmilie:

i wouldn't mind Nikon staying the way it is, and not churning out too many DSLRs that may be designated for the rather amateur market. and staying the way it is, churning out DSLRs on a supposedly higher end of the market and user. it would identify Nikon users as more... professional?? :dunno:

but then again, the temptation to match Canon's obvious technological advance is too great. and very soon Nikon will release a DSLR targetted at a much more prosumer level. perhaps D80? hahaha :bsmilie:

but for now...

Looks wise it's a dream, capabilities gotta wait for reviews to come out before we know how it'll fare... I understand sadness' concern but I personally think Canon is reading the market very well.

by the way, i'm Nikonian through and through.

i can understand their(Canon) marketing strategy very well.
this DSLR has the very basic and most important function which is backward capability wth EF lenses. that to me is a winner.

this body may not be $$, just around some S$1.5k (very competitively priced with G5), i guess.
but as everyone knows... Canon's cannon lenses are not exactly cheap.
this is a very good way of introducing new players into the digital SLR world and then selling them the big lenses that are very unhealthily priced for our wallets. :)

so, Canon has won the market over, effortlessly simply by going for prosumer classes.
tempting new users to get into the digital bandwagon and when they are deep into their fantasies with the 300D, they realise that they need bigger, better lenses... and... u know the rest.

well, i'm impressed.
for Nikon, i guess we are walking into the path of Canon's market. more prosumer products very soon. which i think could only be a win win situation for consumers all alike, be it Canon's or Nikon's.

on a lighter note... D80!!! haha

EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 .

How come the lens' focal lengths are not quoted in 35mm format focal lengths? If I use other Canon EF lenses used with a film 35mm SLR, e.g. a 75-300mm lens, then does the real effective 35mm-equivalent focal length on the DSLR become different?

What are the implications of using normal EF lenses on DSLRs?

What do you mean? Can you elaborate?

As many DSLRs do not have a full frame sensor, the actual focal length will depend on the magnification factor of the particular DSLR. For e.g. the EOS 300D with a magnification factor of 1.6x will mean that a 75-300mm lens becomes 120mm-480mm.

if i understand you correctly, you are asking why the 18-55 lens is quoted as 18-55mm and not the effective 28-90mm on the 300D. simply because it will cause a lot of confusion as lenses are meant to be interchangeable. if it's labeled as 28-90, and sometime in the near future Canon releases another DSLR with a 1.3 FOV crop, the effective focal length is not 28-90mm.

so what exactly is the diff. b/n 10D and 300D ?

both 6.3mpix, both 7-pt AF, both 1/4000 - 30s ...

man , now I feel like a disgruntled owner of the 10D.

wait until we see the full impact of this news.

g5 prices will come down so do many prosumer cams and level entry cams.

hmmm d30 and d60 prices will take a dive......

d10 prices may fall a little?

whats next?

i'm very excited!!!

:)

.. anyone has info on 300D's shutter lag?
