Just bought my 85mm prime lens yesterday.
Did this test to see how my copy fare.

85mmTestChart.jpg

The above chart can see the bokeh, not much of the sharpness as I have reduced the size of the pictures.

f/1.8

f/2

The text is blurred slightly at f/1.8 but it is exceptable if it is not enlarged...
At f/2, it is much better already in its sharpness

f/11

f/22

At f/22, its not that sharp. It doesn't really matter as I don't see myself using f22... :sticktong

cool! so the sweet spot is at f4! thanks for sharing! enjoy your new lens!;)

I will use f/4 if the background is nice.
If the background is messy, use bigger aperture.
If light condition is too bad, use f/1.8 or f/2

;)

By the way, all the text test stripes are 100% crop and not touched up.

thanks for sharing but you're not helping my wallet ha....maybe can get my finance minister to sponsor a bit...

Test the bokeh by taking the following 2 flower shots.
NO retouching were done to these shots

Flower number 1:

It was very windy when I took the pictures so the flowers may not be that sharp.

I have selected 3 spots to have a closer look at:

The flower, not so sharp as it was very windy and hard to focus...

The seed, seems to be in focus..

And the forthground leaves were blurred out, showing some buds ..

sweet spot for the 85mm 1.8 is around f3.2 to f8. If you want to talk about bokeh, 85 1.2L is the way to go... stopping down to f1.6 gives very sharp images, sweet spot between f2 - 8.

I would love to have a 85mm f1.2L.. but it is over my budget...
Thanks for sharing the sweet spot for 85mm f1.2L

After I've been using the 85mm F1.8 for a while, I didnt bother looking through my pictures at 100% anymore. I'm totally in loved with mine. Sharpness is just part of the great features about that lens but the most important factor for me was the color reproduction. Simply breathtaking. Very little post processing needed. Some of my samples of the 85mm can be found here.
