Does anyone own this lens? It is a discontinued product from canon. I heard this lens is pretty good in term if IQ, Built,focus speed and sharpness, but does it perform well under low-light condition? also, wonder if it is good for portrait shots. How does it compare with the current telephoto lens like 70-300 IS?

also, I am curious about the performance between Sigma 70-300 DG Macro and 55-250 IS. I can't seems to find any thread comparing these 2 products. Can anyone enlighten me regarding the 2 lenses?

Haven't seen any review mentioning "lens performance under low light conditions" - usually it's the body that will have problems with focusing or the resulting ISO / shutter speed settings are not favourable. But maybe you want to suggest such a test? :dunno: What exactly do you want to have tested?

I had own this 70-210mm f3.5-4.5 before I upgradeed to 70-200mm f2.8 L 2 years ago. This 70-210 is a good compact lens for almost any kind of photography. User reviews actually varies from people to people. For me I rated a 8/10, for its sharpness at f4.5, f5.6 & f8. It is actually a L lens in disguise.
The only draw back is the zoom-creep - when lens is pointed downwards, zoom barrel will 'pop-out'. Fear not, as a past user, I did some cheap mod to the barrel. Add a thin layer of masking tape to the zoom barrel. The extra layer of tape will keep the zoom barrel in place. Change the tape occasionally.

Compared to 70-300 IS, of course got IS is better, more cosy but not necessary better. I am sure you will be happy with 70-210 for most of the occasions.
This lens work well for 1.6x cropped bodies but doesnt work well on 5D/1D series. Thus when I got my 5D, I sold it to upgrade to 70-200mm f2.8 L. If it work well for my 5D, i would have keep it. But it had serve me very well.

There's a 70-210mm f4 version. U might want to consider that instead. One of my friend owns it.

70-210mm f4 can be had for extremely cheap on Ebay, and can be considered if you're looking for a budget alternative to the 70-200 f4L
haha, do not have the lens for test. I want to test if the speed for the max aperture is fast enough to take pictures under low-lighting. f3.5 seems quite decent to me actually, but will be happy to hear from the actual users' comment

I'm starting to like this lens. Have you tried indoor photography before at its maximum aperture? does it perform alright? The lens is a discontinued product and in fact, a very good low-end lens compare to the newest one in line, making it quite hard to obtain. I saw one in ebay at the moment, hopefully I can get the bid I heard that the lens isn't as good in focusing and has a pretty slow focusing. I think the older version of the 70-210mm has almost everything that I'm looking for at the moment
Right now, my choice will be between 70-210mm USM and 70-300mm IS.- Status
