The Canon 50/1.4 is infamous for having the USM break down. Read more here:

The Sigma 50/1.4 is famous for front/back focusing isssues. So if your copy shows FF/BF, then you need to bring it into Sigma Service Center for a AF calibration. So I seriously suggest you buy a local warranty copy.
AGREED! A friend of mine has had similar probs after some months of use and has already sold his Sig 50 off and has now replaced it with the EF 50 1.4 instead
sigma one calibrate one time at service center can le..
canon one can fix but prone to spoil more than once...

some people may not be fond of the 50mm 1.8 bokeh effect.
that aside, i went with the sigma. solid lens, fine after calibration.
and if im not wrong, micro adjustment can only be done with canon lenses
The Sigma is really good for portrait use as it focus rather quickly and the bokeh is rather smooth.
OT: Another option....Contax N 50 f1.4. You got to love it for the colours. And you can do in-lens micro-adjustments of the near, mid and far distances unlike any other lens.

MWP, so you finally got it. How's the AF speed compared to your Siggy? Sure love to see some nice portraits by this unique lens.

The AF of the N is slow, steady but almost silent. The Sigma AF jolts to the subject faster but is noisy. For tracking kids, the Sigma will be better. For colours vibrancy, the N cannot go wrong. The bokeh of the N is characteristic of Zeiss so some may not like it for portrait. However, the pop of the subject makes this lens very compelling. So both lenses are winner in their own rights.
Another sample - focus is on the water trail, not the statue.

i've had the chance to use both the EF 50 1.4 and the sigma 50 1.4 and IMHO, overall i like the sigma better...
Apart from the above, if you are open to experience manual lenses, then there's a wide variety of options before you, such as contax carl zeiss planar T* 50 1.4, Leica Summicron 50 2, Zuiko 50 1.2, Nikkor 50 1.2 etc etc etc... all can be used on your canon eos body via an appropriate adaptor!

if your application is portrait.....then go for the Sigmalux. It won't go wrong. Sorry to those who have seen these photos many times.
