Canon 18-200mm

Greetings to all fellow photographers and camera users,

i recently just bought a 18-200mm Canon IS lens to mount onto my 550D. felt that at times the required zoom on the initial kit 18-55mm wasnt enough.

now with the new lens, dont know what to shoot.

Any ideas? And how can i better utilize this lens? i realise it has a "lock" function but that only locks at 18mm , right? i tried to lock at other length, but couldnt do....

What to shoot: shoot that thing that made you think that 55mm wasn't enough. If you needs ideas, Flickr is a good starting point.

How to better utilize this lens: go out and shoot...

Lock Function: it will only lock at 18mm.

the lock function is meant to lock the lens during storage or transportation so that the lens will not become loose and start to creep.

18-200 is a good general walkabout lens, and the range is handy for most situations.

to utilize the lens more, go out shoot what you would like to shoot, and explore the lens and its capabilities
a good starting point will be to think about the situations when you felt your 55mm on your kit lens was not enough, those should be where you'd want to use your longer range now.

The lock is there so your lens dont extend by itself. (zoom creep). Lock is at 18mm so it will look as small/short as possible.
This is what happens when you dont do enough homework or dont think carefully before buying. First you said 55 not long enough. Now with 200mm..you dontknow what to use it for. hmm....

About how you can better utilize the lens. - use it as per normal. As and when you feels like using it. No point thinking now i have 200mm so i must shoot beyond 55mm. To me.. it dont work this way. Dont be controlled by the equipment. Anyway... this lens make a very good travel and walkabout - " Multi-purpose Lens"

Well,apparently u might have trying to zoom beyond 55mm & the curent kit lens fall short of the focal length...& now u are saying u do not know wat to shoot with the 18-200mm lens.I do not know how often u shoot but it seems that u are still not familiar as in which focal distance u usually shoot at.It is important to know what kind of focal length u require for ur kind of shoot.Anyway,18-200mm is a great walkabout lens with good IQ & performance.Go & shoot more often & u will know what to shoot at...As for the lens lock,it is only at 18mm to prevent lens creeping during movement & transportation to prevent it from getting loose...Last but not least,18-200mm is not very light either,so u might want to consider the lighter 18-135mm which is also a great walkabout lens but lighter;unless u really need that extra reach.Cheers!

Look at different photo threads and just go out and shoot. This is not a very specialised lens so it is hard to tell you want to shoot. How about as a start go to some interesting places/streets shoot anything that interests you. Landscape, people, animals etc.

No worries, you have a good walkabout lens. It give you the Wideness and reach when you do not want to change lens outside.

I understand the eagerness to try out, but do take sometime to read on the Shutter, Aperture and ISO that will affect your picture.

I am once where you are, maybe still at but I am learning everytime I took pictures, so go out and try it with every distance and adjustment.

For basic, if you want
1. Background blur with subject - you and the subject; subject ad background must be quite a distance away. You can set the aperture to 5.6 at 200mm, ISO depends on lighting quality
2. Better IQ of Picture - you should try to shoot within 50mm
3. Longer Zoom - if Aperture is low (5.6), picture will be soft....set it to F9 or F11, you will get better picture

Lock Function, as explained above, is meant to keep your lens lock while transportation or moving around. As the barrel is not that tight, it will extent out without the lock when camera is at 45 degree

Ask yourself why you got your camera in the first place? There must have been a (hopefully good) reason why you put some hard earned money on the counter to get a camera of this type. So whatever drove you then .. what happened to it?

Good range for travelling and events(weddings, outdoor events) . Hope you find some good shots with it.. I use my tamron 18-270 for long trips..
