Here is a non scientific test conducted for 3 lenses. I try my best
to be as fair as possible. All the shots are at f5.6, 50mm, focusing at the red shirt centre line. Using the same camera and settings and no PS done. The purpose is to see how sharp your eyes are to differentiate sharpness. Of course if anyone find this thread meaningless, just skip and go, and sorry to have wasted your time. It is purely for the fun of it. ;)

1)Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 (D50 kit lens)
2)Tamron 17-50mm f2.8
3)Nikkor 50mm f1.8D

Which picture you think is taken with 1, 2 and 3 ?

Picture B

I've only used the Tamron, so I really can't say. But here's my guess:

- A-3
- B-2
- C-1

Let me try

A=1 (18-55) near wide open at 50mm, so not optimal.
B=2 (17-50) stop down to 5.6, i rem last time my copy produces brighter pics also.
C=3 (50) stop down to 5.6, nikon lenses slightly more contrasty.

I'm juz doing some quick guessing. Can be wrong. May be front/back focusing problem and copy differences also.

:)

a=1
b=3
c=2
:)

A - 1
B - 3
C - 2

These are my wild guess. :)

A: Nikon 18-55mm
B: Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
C: Nikon 50mm f/1.8

my guess simply based on brightness. Know nuts about those lenses :)

A - 1
B - 3
C - 2

:)

A: Nikon 18-55mm
B: Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
C: Nikon 50mm f/1.8

Same for me.

Tamron is a brighter lens, so it goes to Photo B.

Photo C is more contrasty and sharper, so most likely is the 50mm f1.8.

Thus, 18-55 goes to Photo A. :)

My guess :think:

A: (1) Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6
B: (3) Nikkor 50mm f1.8D
C: (2) Tamron 17-50mm f2.8

B - 2)Tamron 17-50mm f2.8
C - 3)Nikkor 50mm f1.8D

B for tamron as it is brighter than the other 2,
and C for #3 as its sharper off-center, looking at the bedsheets...

i) A looks like it lacks some fine details that B and C have.
ii) It seems like the camera exposes similarly for A and C.

So:
A - 1
B - 2
C - 3

Thanks to all who have responded.
Keep posting your views and judgement. I will announce the answer on 15 nov at about 10pm. :)
