How about this?
Did some Levels and Curves adjustment. Pick gray point around the stone areas until the colour looks natural.

Stones are grey.. never thought of that... I was concentrating on making the children's outline more outstanding. Thnz.

mega: the settings i dunnoe.. my dad shot wan.. he using a manual nikon slr.. old old camera. now the camera lost liaoz... too bad.. if not i will play wif it...
The touch up I have done includes the following steps (sorry I could not remember the details):
- Adjusted the levels and colour balance manually. Reduced a lot of blue, and added some red.
- Added some contrast and saturation.
- A slight touch of USM and Despeckle filter.
As for removing the dust and scratches, that is my trade secret...
Just joking. I am glad to share, but it is too difficult to describe. Basically, I use a combination of:
- cut-and-paste: cover up dust and scratches using nearby pixels.
- smudging: to help to smoothen out the boundaries of the pasted sections.
The rest is just the skill and experience gained from touching up hundreds of scanned negatives from a scanner without DigitalICE feature.

Perhaps its just me, but I perfer the one the dots and dirts. Makes the photo look more nostalgic, more of the "human touch".
