YES! definitely....

this is one of the best part for a DX format user. You can acquire and use the older FX lenses which may have corner sharpness or fall-off issues and use them very well on the DX format as those problem areas are now cropped off...

FX lenses are the lenses Nikon denote specially design to be use on full frame digital cameras, of cause you can use it on DX body, just that those image fall outside the DX sensor are not being record.

Other Nikon AF-D lenses which design long before digital camera, which also can use on Nikon DX body, but some DX bodies may not fully compartible due to lack auto focus motor in the body, it also can use on FX body, however, some AF-D lenses do not perform well on FX body even though it is usable, hence Nikon design FX lenses to address this issue.

technically speaking, you can't put anything onto a sensor :bsmilie:
haha anyway, that's beside the point.

A lens produces a circular image, which is recorded by the rectangular sensor. The entire rectangle should fit within this circle in order for the image to fill up the rectangle.
The terms associated with lens, like FX, DX, DiII, etc, are in reference to the diameter of this circular image. Because most digital SLRs use sensors that are smaller than the 35mm film 'window', it made economical sense to produce a range of lenses with a smaller image circle. Thus the lenses could be made lighter, smaller, and most importantly, cheaper.

Any lens not denoted by 'DX' (or equivalent term) has a large enough image circle to cover the FF sensor.
As bro catchlights mentioned, there are new lenses denoted 'FX' which imply they have been designed for the digital FF sensor, with improved corner sharpness, reduced fall-off, etc.

It should be possible.

On FF bodies, the focal length stated on the lenses will be the focal length you're getting.
When you mount on 1.5x crop factor bodies, the focal length will be 1.5x what is stated on the lens.

yes, most film lenses are usable on dx sensor.

but do note, for certain specialty lenses like fisheye, you will not get the same effect.

For Nikon yes, as long it is a F-mount no adapter is needed.

You can use any modern FX mount lens, or manual focus AI, AIS lenses onto your DX sensor bodies. The lower-end DX bodies can use non-AI lenses directly even.

What's so wondrous about it? Other camera brands have the same ability. Except maybe Canon.
