Can a wide angle converter work with SLR cameras?

I am using a Minolta Maxxum 5 with the stock 28-80 lens.

I thought of buying a WA converter and use it with the lens whenever the situation arises; perhaps as a cheaper solution than to buying a lens with a wider focal length.

Will appreciate any advice whether the use of a WA converter will work with a standard SLR camera?

you need a big and high quality one which won't be cheap. the Olympus WCON08B (list price >$300) with 62mm thread might work on your lens but you'll want to test first to look for signs of vignetting at the corners.
