Hotspot:
1. Can Reduce by using larger aperture.
2. Most visible at ~50mm focal length. Can see hexagon shape distinctly. Therefore, avoid 50mm. Long focal length leads to small aperture causing hotspot also

Please post a question in the IR forum if you are not shure about a particular lens or camera.

Thank you and enjoy your IR :)

Thanks Pablo. Have been wanting to do some house keeping to the original thread. Could not find the time to do so.

Most recent additions to the list would be the Olympus E330 and Nikon D200. Can you update the list Pablo.

Guys please keep this thread clean with only the list of cameras capable to IR here and have discussions on separate threads. The previous thread had grown too long with other discussions.

This thread is sticky for easy reference.

Hello all IR interested people.

May I ask that if you have a question regarding a particular camera or lens, please create a new thread and ask.

The reason I ask that you do this, is that this thread is meant for information about cameras and lens only. (a list).

If this thread becomes long by questions and discussions, I have to wipe it and re-do it.

This results in your postings being deleted and I don't want to do that.

Other than creating a new thread you can also PM me.

If I have the answer I will get back to you as soon as I can.

If I don't have the answer (I am an amature at this), I will do my best to find out for you.

I thank you :)

Hi All,

Please refrain from posting in this sticky thread.
This thread is meant for information about cameras and lens only capable of doing IR.
Will appreciate that you either PM our IR Moderator Teerex or Pablo if you need to add on to the list or start a new thread if you need to post a question about doing IR.
Please kindly read through the following reasons as listed in post #2 and post #3, we don't wish to engage in long discussion using this thread and we hope to keep in neat for easy reference. Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi Teerex,

Please help to delete off those posts and start a new one to combine them if needed. Thank you very much.

Thanks to limwhow.
He has done some extensive IR tests with some lenses on his Canon 20D. Here's his detailed field report.

After my use of the following, what I have found :-

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4.0-5.6
Not good on my 20D. At every aperture f/4.0, 5.6, 6.3, 7.1, 8.0 and all - it gives hot spot in the centre of the field of vision - almost every shot.
I am surprised because on the list of lenses suitable, it is stated to be good for IR. I wonder if it could be just my copy?

Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6
This one behaves variably. At f/6.3 and under certain lighting, it gives hot spot. So far, at f/4.0 I have not encountered hot spots, only one picture there was a faint hint of hot spot.

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
This one also does give hot spot at f/8.0, again under certain sun lighting. I have shots at f/8.0 that do not have hot spots. Being inexperienced as I am, I cannot explain why sometimes I get hot spots, sometimes I don't.
At f/4.0 generally ok.

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L
Fantastic lens. Very even exposure. No signs of hot spots at all at all aperture.

EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5.
Very good. No hot spots at all at all apertures.

EF 17-40mm f/4
Very good. No hot spots at all at all apertures.

These are all the lenses that I have personally tested and experimented at all the stated apertures. I own every one of them, except the 17-40mm.

I hope these would be of some help.
Sincerely,
limwhow

Credits to Shutter Journey for the below tests with various lenses.

Under the sticky "Camera & Lenses Capable of IR" - I would like to mention that I had tried a few lenses to check for hotspotting.

The EF 17-40mm F4L USM is listed as "Good", but yesterday when I tried out, I got slight Hotspot at focal length of 17mm & 24mm. Not sure if it is my copy, I will try to get another 17-40mm to try, if still got hotspot, i think that list needs to be updated.

Other lenses tried.
* All test done with Canon 350D-IR and done at various stops for both focal range and F stops.

EFS 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS - As stated on the List - this is one BAD Lens!!!
EF 17-40mm F4L USM - Slight hotspotting appears at 17mm & 24mm stops.
EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye - Good, very very good.
EF 50mm F1.8 II - Super Gooder!!
EF 35-80mm F4-5.6 II - Great IR Colors and hotspotting is slight at F14 & above.
AF 28-105mm F2.8-3.8 CF (Cosina) - Good!!! Slight hotspotting starts at F18 onwards.
EF 28mm F2.8 - Great Lens for IR! Sharp & Colourful IR photos!
Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM - Hotspot appears from F10 onwards, otherwise, not bad for IR Telephoto.

Lenses yet to try which I will do it really soon.
EF 100mm F2.8 Macro USM
EF 70-200mm F4L USM

Thanks to Shutter Journey for sharing with us his experiences with various lenses on IR.
Here's his latest update as per August 2010

More Updates 2nd August 2010

* All test done with Canon 350D-IR with ELP and done at various stops for both focal range and F stops.

EFS 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS
- As stated on the List - this is one BAD Lens!!!

EF 17-40mm F4L USM
- Slight hotspotting appears at 17mm & 24mm stops.

EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye
- Good, IR Lens, very very good.

EF 50mm F1.8 II
- Super Gooder!! Sharp IR photos with NO hotspots!

EF 35-80mm F4-5.6 II (Please Note there are I, II & II version of this lens)
- Great IR Colors and hotspotting is slight at F14 & above.

EF 35-80mm F4-5.6 III
- Hotspotting all the way.

AF 28-105mm F2.8-3.8 CF (Cosina)
- Good!!! Slight hotspotting starts at F18 onwards.

EF 28mm F2.8
- Great Lens for IR! Sharp & Colourful IR photos!

Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM
- Hotspot appears from F10 onwards, otherwise, not bad for IR Telephoto. (IR Wildlife)

EF 100mm F2.8 Macro USM
- Very good macro lens for IR, no hotspot at all! (IR Macro & Portrait)

EF 70-200mm F4 L USM
- Good IR Portrait lens. At 150mm, slight hotspotting with UV filter, however problem solved when UV is removed. (B+W)

Tokina ATX16.5-135mm DX
- Inconsistent Lens. At F14, mild hotspotting appears on and off. (Some has it and some dun). Lens Flares is bad (Was testing without Hood), could be better if with hood.
For crop bodies, the wild angle is exceptionally cool.
- Tested Round 2 with hood, hotspotting became lesser. Still inconsistent to me.

Tamron 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XRDi LD Aspherical IF Macro
- Average for IR. Quite bad hotspotting when shot at 28mm stop, but when zoom to 50mm & above, hotspotting is minimal. Macro function is not bad for IR.

EF 24-70mm F2.8L USM
- Buy this lens for IR. Best. Sharp & zero hotspotting at all stops or apeture. (No wonder cost so much)
