Hi,

I'll be helping my company to take D & D photos at Marriot Hotel as such I'd would be appreciated if anyone can help me recommend on the most apprioate settings for my camera. Equipment used:

Canon 20D
Flash 580Ex with omnibounce
17 - 40mm & 50mm

There's no hard rules for photography.

Just set to A mode and whack. :)

probably you can try the following settings for a start:

Manual Mode, ISO 400, 1/30 and f/5.6.

Most likely the ceiling would be too high to bounce, try using a bounce card for the flash.

since u are using digital, u have slightly lesser to worry about.
just go there a bit earlier, try out the different settings til u get what u want ba. :)
a bounce card would be good i guess, hotels give me a feeling that their ceilings are quite high and usually coloured too...

or just do what espn suggested, just use P mode and snap. hehe

hahaha... the same combo i would use.
btw caseytan, long time no see.

Hrmm.. Can try Daylight WB, ISO 1600 & slower shutter speeds (1/15 - 1/30) w/o flash if the lighting is tungsten. Can get a nice effect with slight blur plus a slightly grainy/ noisy picture to get the mood. More for the dance portion though..

Just play with ettl on our 580ex as well as flash compensation if needed.

Just leave your 580ex as e-ttl and don't have to set it to manual mode. Set Manual Mode on cam and try out the settings i mentioned in my earlier posts.

My settings are below. Shld well fine.

f 5.6
shutter 1/30 (to capture background ambience light)
white balance Flash or Sunlight -1
camera compensation + 2/3
flash auto mode (TTL or AA)
flash compensation +2/3
bounce flash
ISO 800

canon's cam better not set to A mode for D7D functions.

the shutter and apreture setting will be based on ambient lights metering...regardless of flash.

unless you want to risk motion blur for pics taken in "darken" area/spots... adviceable to fix the shutter setting.

Paul,

thanks for your advise.

this is what i'd do
apperture priority mode
apperture: wide open
iso: 800
flash: point up with built in bounce card

for ya table shots...u may wanna use direct flash.....juz in case the ceiling is too high...

cheers..
